What are the causes of the breakdown of the community of Salem? What does the play teach us about the role and effects of individuals in society?

The crucible is a play written by the playwright Arthur Miller in 1953. It is based on the Salem witch trials and was written in response to McCarthyism. “McCarthyism is unscrupulously accusing people of disloyalty (as by saying they were Communists)”. The situation is very similar in the play, people are accused of having seen the devil and are hung when the answer they wanted to hear was given. Things such as power and reputation cause people to blame each other and pull the person down. This is just human nature, but when this happens on a larger scale, such as the community of Salem and causes it to breakdown. In this case, there are many reasons for why the community breaks down. A specific event isn’t the only thing that affects a community, even individuals can.
In Salem, there are different kinds of people. People like John Proctor who pays only attention to his own life and also people like Parris and Abigail who crave for attention from the society. The play starts off with Parris worried about his daughter Betty who is in bed and is in a sort of coma. He calls the best doctor in the area and several others, but the second they are unable to give an answer, they mention witchcraft. This clearly shows that everybody wants something to blame, and in this case, the doctor blames witchcraft which is something no one has any information on because he doesn’t want to be seen as a bad doctor. His reputation is at stake and therefore makes up a believable lie.
