Margaret is a complicated woman; she is married to her husband Harry.
She is a very conventional shopper, but unlike other people she rarely gets to pay for any of the things. She’s been “shopping” in London like this for 9 years; no one has ever suspected her.
Her husband would occasionally talk about the things that he liked, or wanted if he had the money for it. Every time he does that she would write it down on her” shopping” list:
Red towels.
Knives.
Tights.
Remnants.
Pendant.
Giant cup.
Table-lighter.
Jacket.
PP. 100 line 19 - 20 ”She took a shopping bag, she always carried enough money to pay for these listed items, but rarely ever got to pay.”
You can see that she is not the normal type of shoplifter. She’s much more organized than regular thieves; she has a list of what she’s going to steal. Other shoplifters would just steal the easiest and the most expensive they could find. She knows exactly what she wants and how she’s going to get it.
PP. 102 line 25-30 “The towels were easy. You pick up a big one, middle-sized one and two small ones, you take them out under the light to examine them properly. Then moving slowly and concentrate on them carefully, looking neither left nor right.”
