I am going to analyse and interpret “Insignificant Gestures”.
“Insignificant Gestures” is a short story written in 2007 by Jo Cannon.
In this short story the main character, who is also the narrator, is looking back at his horrible and sensitive time as an doctor in Africa, it means that the story is based on flashbacks.
The narrator is telling about all the horror he met and we are hearing about how it infects his life continually. At his time in Africa, his motivation is, Celia, his African servant. After her death, he is trapped in his own feelings
The narrator is working as doctor in Africa, he works as a district health officer. He has a lots of money. He is living alone, he does not have a wife, owing to that he needs someone to take care of him. He is a person who wants to help everybody and gives what he has, for example he hires Celia as a servant, though he does not want it. He does it because of Celia’s responsibility towards her family. Celia’s family depend on her.
The relationship between the narrator and Celia change over time. The relationship between the narrator and Celia never gets physical, but they both feel protect by gesture, they feel free from their entourage, the horrible world around them.
