Analyse af Jo Cannons novelle 'Insignificant Gestures'

Insignificant Gestures is a short story and it´s written by Jo Cannon in 2007.The story is told by a doctor, which also is the narrator, and he tells about his past in flashbacks. In the beginning of the story he tells about some of the less good things he connects with his experiences in Africa. He will never practice as a doctor again after his trip to Africa.He never wants to smell blood again or witness another dead. It all started, when he lived in Africa 10 years ago. He was in Africa, because he thought he could make a difference, and help the poor and sick people. He lived in a house with a servant called Celia. Celia was a young woman. She was about sixteen. Her duty was to make sure, that the house was well- ordered. The doctor loved to draw and he had drawn since he was a teen.One day he discovered that Celia was watching him while he was drawing. The doctor gave her some drawing materials, and he discovered that she was a natural. They got a silent, but good relationship with each other. But one day Celia got sick, and she was send to a hospital, and there she died. The doctor discovered that she died of meningitis and he is now haunted by the memories, because he knows that he could have threaded her and thereby saved her life.
