Sometimes a small experience or a meeting with a person makes a huge transformation in your life. You can read a book, which opens your eyes for something new, have a conversation with a friend, who says something you will start thinking about or you meet a strange person and the meeting changes your life forever. No matter what you experience it will change your life. But what if the change is too big and you can’t recognize yourself anymore?
From a series of flashbacks from the narrators past, we get a picture of the mind of a character, which has suffered lots of emotional damage. This damage is caused by two errors of judgement, which he made when he was in Africa as a health officer. He left Africa many years ago, but he still suffers from his trauma. His is unable to forgive himself for the things he has done; “If I could peel back time, I would do things differently. But you don’t get second chances.” He really wishes, he had made other choices and now he realizes that it’s too late.
In Africa he experienced life and death very close to himself, and he never wanted to go back as a doctor, and became instead a psychiatrist. “I retained as a psychiatrist. I never wanted to smell blood again”. Now he is on drugged with medicine and he has giving up his passion for drawing, because he’s afraid letting his mind free and enjoy the pleasure the drawing is giving him; “That’s why I don’t draw any more – I don’t like the places my thoughts go when set free”.
