The English middle class has got a bad raputation, if you believe in a rapport that has reasonly been puplished. An organisation which is called International Youth Welfare and London University have made a repport together, with material collected from questionnaires sent of to about 1500 au pair girls in different parts of England. Three fourths of the questionnaires were returned and revealed some unpleasant facts about how young girls that come to England to learn the language, are treated.
There is often a big difference between what young girls are told before they leave and the way they are actualy treated by their host families in England. A large number of them say that they only earn 9 pounds a week, work about 50 hours a week and a lot of them do not eat with the family and do not get enough food.
The president of the International Youth Welfare, Dom Placid, who is a monk, came to England 20 years ago and still lives there. He, as well as others in the organisation, thinks that it is important that the puplic is made aware of the situation for the au pair girls, so the bad conditions can be improved. The organisation has there fore suggested that there is made a booklet to all au pair girls that come to England as well as for the host families. That might give the English middle class families a better reputation in other European countries.
