The English middleclass has got a bad reputation, if you should believe in a report, which recently had been published. An organisation, which is called International Youth Welfare and London University, had made the report together by material, which is gathering from questionnaire brought out to around 1500 au pair girls in different parts of England. Three quarters of the questionnaire was returned and showed some unpleasant facts about how young girls there come to England to learn the language are treated.
There are often big difference between what the young girls are told before they leave and the way they are being treated by their host families in England. A large number says that they only earn £9 a week that they work about 50 hours a week and a lot of them don’t eat with the family and don’t get food enough.
The chairman of International Youth Welfare, Dom Placid, which is monk, came self to England 20 years ago and still live there. He as well as other in the organisation means that it’s important that the situation for au pair girls gets known so that the bad conditions can be improved. The organisation has therefore sufficient that there makes a booklet to all au pair girls, there comes to England, and to the host families. It could maybe give the English middleclass families a better reputation in other European countries.
