The English middle class has got a bad reputation, if we should believe a report, which have recently has been published. An organization called International Youth Welfare and London University have make the report together, of material collected from some questionnaires, send to around 1500 au pair girls in different parts of England. Three quarters of the questionnaires have been returned, and it’s showing some unpleasant facts about how young girls, there is coming to England to learn the language are treated.
There is often big different between what the young girls have been told before they travel, and the way they are treated by their host families in England. Many say that they only own £9 a week. That they work around 50 hours a week and a lot of them do not eat with their host families and they don’t get enough food.
The President for International Youth Welfare, Dom Placid is monk, came to England himself 20 years ago and still lives there. He as well as other in the organization says that it’s important that the situation for the au pair girls becomes known, so that the poor conditions can be improved. The organization has therefore proposed to get a booklet to all au pair girls, that is coming to England and for the host families. That maybe could give the English middle class better reputation in other European countries
