The English middleclass have got a bad reputation, if you believe a report that recently has been published. An organization, which is called the International Youth Welfare, and London University have made the report together based on material, which is gathered from questionnaires sent out to about 1500 au pair girls from different parts of England. Three quarters of the questionnaires were returned, and they show some unpleasant facts about how young girls, who come to England to learn the language, are being treated. There is often a big difference between what the young girls are told before they travel, and the way they get treated by their host families in England. A big number says, that they only make 75 pounds pr. week, and they work about 50 hours pr. week, and a lot of them does not eat with the family, and does not get enough food.
The chairman for the International Youth Welfare, Dom Placid who is a monk, came to England by himself for about 20 years ago, and he still lives there. He, as well as others in the organization, thinks it is important that the situation for the au pair girls get known, so that the bad conditions can be improved. The organization has therefore suggested that there will be made a booklet to all the au pair girls who come to England, and to the host families.
