The english middleclass has got a bad reputation, if you will trust a new report that recently has been publicized. An organisation, called International Youth Welfare, and London University have made the report together, of material that has been gathered from questionnaires, send to approximately 1500 au pair girls in different parts of England. 75 percent got returned, and shoved some unpleasant facts about how young girls, who are coming to England to learn the language, are getting treated.
Often there is a big difference between what the young girls are getting told before they leave and the way they are getting treated by their host families in England. A big number are saying, that they are earning nothing more than £9 a week, that they are working circa 50 hours a week, and a numerous part of them are not dining with the family and does not get enough food.
The president of International Youth Welfare, Dom Placid, who is a monk, arrived to England 20 years ago and still lives there. He, as well as others in the organisation, thinks that it is important the situation for the au pair girls will get known, so the bad conditions can get improved. The organisation have of that reason suggested, that a booklet should be made for all the au pair girls, who arrives in England, and for the host families. That could might give the english middleclass families a better reputation in other european countries.
