Imagine a flock of monkeys in the deep jungle, sitting together, eating bananas. If we look at our primates; the monkeys, and consider their way of living, it is actually very much like our own way of living. Monkeys live in packs, consisting of alpha-male, many ‘average’ monkeys, and last, but not least, there will be a couple of monkeys, who are considered the weakest. They don’t have any they are pretty much forced to ‘follow’ the leader if they want to survive. Elizabeth is a member of a group such as this. She is one of the weak ones, but still as part of the group, and for some reason it is very important for her to keep her status. I wonder why.
This short story is about a young girl called Celia who is bullied. The story is told by the 1st person narrator; Elizabeth. Elizabeth is torn between being one of the bullies, but at the same time she knows what she and her friends are doing very wrong. Elizabeth’s mother threatens with spanking in public, if she ever bullying Celia again. Therefore Elizabeth has to try into fit both groups. She feels she needs t keep bullying Celia, because otherwise her friends might start bullying her:
