Shopping is an art. The Americans seems to be born with it. If you start in New York, you should probably go to one of these Department Stores, where everything’s available – toys and socks on the first floor, monkeys and parrots on the second, shovels and umbrellas on the third, and so on. The furniture is to be found on the seventh and eighth floors, so that the men that are going to be carrying it down can get a little exercise.
Whatever you buy here can be traded in for something different. Say, a lady buys a zhevra print dress on Monday, and then comes back Tuesday to turn it in for a real zhevra or a regular dress instead. And it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any money. You just give them a name and an address. After a while you decide to try out one of the smaller places. You want a scarf. Before breathing twice, the man behind the counter – what looks like the owner himself – has filled it up with sheets and towels. He offers you all this for ten dollars. You hesitate. He throws more stuff over the counter. There’s only one thing to do – accept the offer as fast as possible. With all these money saved you can go shopping again as soon as the next day. You get nervous and a little afraid that he will regret it and take back the offer. You nod – a little touched, and he wraps two big packs without saying a thing or showing his feelings. This man must loose money every day.
