Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born I 1918 in an African village. His father was a chief so you can say that Nelson was a little bit spoiled. At the ages of five Nelson looked after cattle, played in the mountains, swam in the rivers. In the ages of seven he began in school he was clever so later he went to the university to become lawyer. Nelson middle named “Rolihlahla” means trouble maker. One day his family told him to marry a girl they’d found for him but he would rather find his own wife so he ran away to Johannesburg. In 1961 the apartheid government wanted to arrest nelson and put him in prison so he had to hide from the police. So he disguised himself sometimes as a worker and sometimes as a driver. In 1962 the police caught him and sent him to a island called Robben Island. Nelson was kept in prison in 28 years.
What did he fight for?
Nelson was fighting for an organisation called ANC and they were fighting for all the Africans, Indians, coloureds and a few white people who hated apartheid. Everybody liked him so soon he became one of the leaders in the group. Nelson was a brilliant and kind leader os when asked people to demonstrate thousands of people went into the streets to protest.
