At the beginning of the text we hear about Maria, who has been late again. And if she made it in for work, there was a possibility that she would lose her job. As she arrives, or is about to arrive, for her job she sees that only one of the towers are standing. In a second she thinks that she is in the wrong street, but she quickly finds out that she is at the right street and she sees that the second tower is falling as well. As a reader you instantly think that it is another story about the worldwide known incident that happened the 11th of September 2001, where two airplanes flew into the two towers known as The World Trade Center. But it actually is not. The main character Maria actually does not really care. She seems absent and it is seems strange as a reader. Maria does not think about the victims but just takes home and are happy that she is not going to work. She just went home, packed her bags and drove north. Maria just drove. She did not think about anything and only stopped for water and when she became tired, she pulled over to take a nap and then continued her driving. If people talked to her, she did not remember, if she spooked she had no idea about what she said. All she knew was that she could drive into oblivion. No one would know who had survived and who has died in the fiery collapse. She could abandon her past, start again or disappear forever. Fade away to a pale silvery slip of ghost.
