Write a summary of Spread your Legs and Smile in no more than 150 words.

The story is told by the author Shashi Tharoor, who has been a frequent flier since he was 6. He tells that until now airport terminals have been familiar for him, but after 9/11, it’s all got different. Security checks are gone so massive that one of his best friends refuses to fly now. He doesn’t mind that his luggage is being checked but he asks questions, about why his things must go through an inspection by supervisors. He thinks he’s lucky compared to others who aren’t terrorists, but are going through the humiliating check, like 6 years old children. And if they treat you badly, don’t complain, because then they really come down on you – just smile and look happy.

Give an outline of the various attitudes to airport security in the texts.

In text 1 “Spread your legs and smile” the general attitude to airport security is annoyed and irritated. The way that the author tells us about the security people’s investigation of luggage is not a treatment anyone should go through. And the people, the security is often extra focused on, are picked from the low society. The compares to the element of risk they pose. Elderly women and handicapped have to submit go through an extra inspection of luggage. Finally, if though you’re entire luggage is packed perfectly according to the agreement with the rules you may not forget to smile and look happy.
