Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in an African village. When he turned seven, he started school. He was a very clever student and later in his life he went to university to become a lawyer. It was only a few Africans who got the chance of going to university, so he was very lucky that he got the chance. A few years later he ran away to Johannesburg because he didn’t wanted to marry the girl his parents wanted him to marry. In Johannesburg he met people who were fighting apartheid and they worked in an organization called the ANC. He knew how people were poor and treated badly because the government only cared for white people and therefore he wanted to change the country into a place for all South Africans, no matter what color of skin they had. So Nelson Mandela joined the ANC and soon he became the leader of the ANC. Everybody, who hated apartheid, liked him – even a few white people. They’d all do anything he said, because he was a brilliant and kind leader. The white people didn’t want to share the country with the Africans so Nelson asked people to demonstrate against apartheid and thousands of people went into the streets to protest against racism and the white government. But the white people sent the police and the army to fight the demonstrates and the people started killing innocent people. In 1962 the police sent him to prison on an island called Robben Island and he was kept in prison for 28 years. Outside the prison the people wanted him out and they saw him still as their leader. So finally in 1991 he was sat free and the people were very happy because they got their leader back. In 1994, all people in South Africa could vote and they elected Nelson Mandela as the first black president and he was president in South Africa until 1999. I have compared Nelson Mandela with Gandhi because both of them had fought for their people and the country. Gandhi was born in 1869 and died in 1948. He was a politician in India and he spearheaded the Indian independence movement. He fought from 1893 to 1914 in South Africa to improve Indian conditions there. Gandhi was repeatedly imprisoned by the British. He was opposed to India’s share in Pakistan and India in 1947 and campaigned for a joint Muslim-Hindu state, but was murdered by a Hindu fanatic who was opposed to reconciliation with Muslims. I have chosen to write about Nelson Mandela because I think what he had done for the black people and for apartheid is really good. And even after so many years in prison he still wanted to fight for his people and the people still wanted him as their leader. I have seen the movie Goodbye Bafana and in the movie you can see how it was, and it was filmed in the prison so you followed him and saw what he was dealing with. And after I saw the movie I’ve got my eyes of for what he did for the black people and I think that what he had done for the black people is amazing.
