Interesting Investigation- How old is Nick? Find evidence of his age in the text and argue your point.Through the story Nick seems unprepared for the things that are going on in the camp. It might be because things have gone very fast, and Nick and his father were called out there, without any warning. The fact, that Nick’s father brought Nick along, doesn’t seem deliberate, because the questions he asks, as “Do ladies always have such hard time having babies”, gives the impression, that he is way too young and uncomprehending.But his father may not have anywhere else to have him; he might be a single parent. That is the feeling I get as reader, because a mother figure is not mentioned. It does not mean that Nick does not have a mother or is not living with her, it’s just the impression this short story give me. The way Nick is acting while the woman in the shanty is having a caesarean, with hiding outside the shanty and looking in other direction, makes him seems immature and childish, since he has traveled this far away from home, could he at least help his father. It is especially the questions he asks through the story, that make Nick seems like a child. This conversation between him and his father is an excellent example: “’This woman is going to have a baby Nick,’ he said. ‘I know,’ said Nick. ‘You don’t know,’ said his father. ‘Listen to me…’ …. ‘I see,’ Nick said.”. It shows that Nick appears, or wants to appear, smart and knowing, but the truth is, that he is not. That represents that he is in the age, where you want to be independent and stand on your own legs, but in fact, you will still need support and help from friends and family. In the end Nick is around seven to ten years old. - Uncle George is a bastard. Prove me wrong or right by finding evidence in the text to support your claim. Uncle George is with Nick and his father from the beginning and he seems like the real intern and helper of Nick’s father, even though Nick is asked by his father, to be the intern. But it does not seem like he wants to be the intern. “Uncle George said: “Damn squaw bitch”” This quotation is when Nicks father is operation the woman and then Uncle George and tree other Indian men are holding the woman still. She is in such pain, that she bit Uncle George in his arm and the quotation is his reaction to that. It might be painful for him, but it’s still very disrespectful of him, in this situation, where she needs to get rid of her pain in proportion to, that she is having a caesarian without anaesthetics. In the rest of the short story he pays more attention to his arm, then anything else. “Uncle George was standing against the wall, looking at his arm. “Oh, you are a great man, all right,” he said.””This quotation shows, that Uncle George has been hurt, not only physical but also mentally. Maybe he has the impression, that it was not a coincidence that he was bit and not one of the other Indians. That is perhaps because, he is related to Nicks father who is making the woman in labor feeling pain, and then she is taking revenge, when she bits him. Nick’s father has to convince him, that is has nothing to do with him, because George is taking it personal. This shows, that Uncle George is a helpful man with a lot of feeling, which proves that Uncle George is not a bastard.
