This story is about a man named Ken Carter. Ken owns a sports shop and he is about to take a big step and become the coach for Richmond High school’s basketball team.
And it is not just a big step, it’s a huge step do to the fact that the team has only won 4 games last season, and the players on the team haven’t achieved anything for a very long time. But Ken has a lot of experience, so maybe he will get them back on track.
He probably will, but it will first of all require a lot of training, and secondly a contract, because playing high school basketball takes more than skill, perseverance, discipline and teamwork – especially when you play for Coach Carter, you must also achieve good grades. So the contract assures him that every player will perform their best on the court and in the classroom. On Coach Carter’s watch it’s not only about winning games, it’s about the team’s future!
That’s why, when some of Carter’s players let their grades slip, he chooses to padlock the gym, keeping the undefeated team from practicing and from playing league games. Standing up to school officials who oppose him, not to mention a town full of angry parents, many of whom see basketball as the only way for their sons to get out of Richmond high, but Carter refuses to back down. Having attended Richmond High himself, he has literally been in those boys shoes too. Like them he loved playing basketball. And even though he was a very good player, and still held many of the school’s records, it is education – not basketball – that Carter feels led him to the man he is today.
