The true-life story of a coach who tries to teach his players that there is more in life than basketball. Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) was once a star player on the Richmond High School basketball team in Richmond, CA, in the 1970’s leading his team in points, assists and steals per game. Some years later, he returns to the school and to the team as the new basketball head coach. Carter quickly sees that this would be a difficult job for him. The team is having an embarrassing season, and their fights off the court are more chosen than their play on the court. While Carter wants to make the Richmond Oilers into a winning team, he also wants a lot more from them. He wants to teach the boys respect and Discipline, and that they must participate and follow in the classroom as well as in the gym. Under Carter's coaching, the team turns their losing season around, with the state title championship. However, when Carter finds out that a number of his players including his star player have let their grade point averages slip below C-, as agreed in the contract. He entered into with the students, he decides to lock the team and the team’s practise and a few games out of the gym and send them into the library until their grades improve. Carter's plan quickly becomes a subject of controversy among parents and team boosters, and their objections are soon picked up by the local news media, many of them are not sympathetic to Carter's believe that his players must have goals beyond college basketball or NBA.
