The film is a true story of a white South African racist whose life was profoundly altered by the black prisoner he guarded for twenty years. The prisoner's name was Nelson Mandela.
James Gregory, a racist, white Afrikaner, speak the language Xhosa. He will guard the "Kaffirs", where he is set to read their letters and listen to conversations. He meets Mandela when he realizes that Mandela is right in his case, but he is still against blacks and don't believe it is true.
