The Intruder is a novel written by Andre Dubus. It is about this boy called Kenneth and his family. They are out camping in this house far away from where they usually live. Kenneth likes to play in the woods, especially the woods near this camp they are at. When he is out playing, he usually plays alone. Kenneth has a big imagination and imagines all the things he does in the forest. He has this gun that he likes cleaning and play with. At this camp, the parents are going out, leaving Kenneth and his sister Connie. Connie is having a guy over. After a nice talk between Connie and the guy Douglas, he goes home. However, later on Kenneth hears some footsteps and decides to take action himself. He thinks it is a prowler and takes the shot. Later on he realizes that he by mistake shot Douglas, Connie’s friend. When the parents come home, the dad is trying to calm by saying that it was just a prowler, however Kenneth is sure that he shot the wrong guy.
The environment:
As mentioned, this text takes place in the family’s camp house. That is placed 60 miles, almost 100 kilometers from their home in Louisiana. It is a place where Kenneth likes to go a lot because he gets sick of the environmental noise in Louisiana. There is this forest nearby that Kenneth loves to play in, and be in his own world. It is also mentioned in the text that they have been there in the winter. So it is not just a summerhouse.
