Analyse af Carolyn A. Drakes novelle 'Pill Pusher'

The story “Pill Pusher” by Carolyn A. Drake begins with the main character that is very tired about working at a pharmacy. the main character is instructing a woman to wait in line, the woman that the main character calls bug eyes is very impatient and very frustrated about having to wait. the main character forms a negative first impression on the women, the main character judges the women by her looks and how she is behaving. The main character is also disappointed by herself about working in retail after obtaining a pharmacy degree. The main character soon realizes that the child has leukemia. the main character offers the woman some advice about how to reduce her daughter’s nausea. The woman thanks the main character and apologizes for arguing with her.

Analyse the short story

“The main character realizing that she has made “a $70,000 mistake” The short story begins in the middle of events. the main character is disappointment with having to work in retail after studying pharmacy for six years, and it also refers to her student debt. She is confronted with a moral dilemma, and she is disappointed about how her career turned out. She feels very guilty about selling medication that makes people addictive. The main character it's also dismissive of the other customers in the pharmacy, she starts making up reasons why they came to the pharmacy and starts judging them by their looks. as a woman starts an argument with the main character the tension in the story rises, and everyone in the pharmacy starts to exchange looks even though they pretend not to. The main character starts to diagnose the woman's incurable diagnose being a “bloated soccer mom who consumes Lean Cuisines, goes to Pilates classes, end take placebo- expects dietary supplements because Oprah told her to” (39-40). Even though the woman was being very unpleasant and in polite, the main character agreed to help the woman, but since the woman needed liquid medicine for her daughter who was unable to swallow large pills, and that was what she had on prescription, the pharmacist had to call their doctor to change their prescription. When the woman started to get very impatient and was getting very angry, she started an argument and was threatening the main character to file a complaint against her, she replied with “Go for it!” I roar back, slamming the prescription on the counter. “In the meantime, can I get back to my goddanmjob?” (64-65). When the main character suddenly realized that there was going to be negative consequences on her actions, she started to fear if her job will be affected, and she realized that she went too far. She was searching for the woman's doctors phone number on the computer, so that she could call and change the prescription. She noticed there was notes released to the woman's prescription, and the main character realized that the woman's daughter has leukemia and not a cold, as her first thought was. She read to herself “Zofran for the nausea, steroids for the bloating, Percocet for the pain…. Dasatinib. Leukemia. Damn” (91-92) estimate character looked back at the woman she noticed that she looked very old for her age, and she looked tired. When the doctor approved the change of prescription, she handed the medication to the woman, and offered the woman a tip about how to help with the nausea, the woman was grateful for the gesture and thanked the main character and apologize to her. in return she had her first general smile today, and the woman left the pharmacy, while the main character returned to helping the rest of the customers.
