The novel starts with a little description of the Dursley family, which is a typical middle-class family, 2 parents and a son named Dudley. Harry potter lives with the Dursley family and they really don’t treat him like he was a member of the family, but more like he was some kind of virus they can’t get rid of. Harry lives with them, because his real parents Lily and James Potter passed away when Harry was a baby and the Dursley’s were the only other family relatives left to take care of him. What Harry doesn’t know is that his parent didn’t die in a car crash but actually had been murdered by the dark wizard, Voldemort. Voldemort also attempted to kill Harry, but for some unexplained reason Harry overcame the killing curse and survived the attack. The only sign of, that there had been a conflict between him and Voldemort is a unique lightning shaped scar on his forehead. The scar reviles his true identity and later in the story it shows that Harry is about to discover how people, he didn’t even know existed, knows a lot more about him than Harry does himself. While living with the Dursley’s in their perfectly normal house in Privet Drive, the only thing Harry could look forward to, was to start at the local secondary school next term, so he didn’t have to live with the annoying and spoiled Dudley any more. Harry seemed to be experiencing a lot of strange and unexplainable things here at the time, almost like magic. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, mysterious letters began to arrive for Harry. Uncle Vernon refused to let Harry read them, but the letters kept on arriving, so the uncle decided by himself, to take the family to a desolate shack on an island, which was the night before Harry’s eleventh birthday. At midnight Hagrid,, the giant, came to visit Harry and gave Harry the option to rather come to Hogwards with him or stay with the Dursley’s, but of course Harry chose to take with Hagrid.
