Obesity is a big problem in the Danish society. In the recent years there have been an increase in the prevalence of obesity. Since 1987 the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled. The increase is seen especially among young people and people with a low education. “At present 30 to 40% of adults are overweight. This concerns more than 1.3 million Danes. 10 to 13% are obese, which corresponds to about 400,000 individuals. Almost 100,000 suffer from health problems as a consequence of obesity.” (1) These are facts that show this is a problem, which we all need to be aware of, to be able to change the current development in our lifestyle. If we don’t change our lifestyle, it will be a major global problem in the future.

Our weight depends on the number of calories we consume. If we consume more calories than we use, we will gain weight over time. Many Danes aren’t very physically active. Especially children and adolescents aren’t as active as they were years ago. I think one of the reasons is the development in the technology. Many young people spend hours every day after school watching television, playing computer games and doing homework instead of playing physical active games or go to sport. It is important that the adults are good role models for their children, because many adults aren’t either very physically active in their daily life. They for example go by car instead of bicycling and there are fewer physical demands at their work or at home because of the modern technology. People who are inactive are more likely to gain weight because they don’t burn the same number of calories as they consume from food and drinks.
