This is an analyses an interpretation of the movie from 1989, Born on the 4th of July, starring Tom Cruise as Ron Kovic, a young American man who goes to Vietnam as a veteran, and through his life experiences changes the way America viewed war.

Ron, also known as Ronny was brought up in a family of Christians and patriots, always being told to love his country and to put his faith in god. When he is nearing the end of his school time, an army general comes to his high school to talk about the student’s plans for the future. Ron, who was never the best academically, but who is very active sportsman wishes to aid his beloved country, which is right now fighting out the Vietnam War. He completes the intro course and goes off to fight in Vietnam, with the support of his family, praising him for his loyalty and courage. It is clearly shown that especially his mother is proud of him for going, but it seems his father is more hesitant, having taken part in a war himself.

After serving for some time, Ron’s platoon is given the task to infiltrate a village and kill any hidden Viet Cong . By accident they shoot numerous women and children and have to abandon them when the real Viet Cong show up. The battle is hectic and in the heat of the moment Ron aims and shoots his comrade Wilson, which ends up haunting him. In Ron’s last battle as a soldier he is shot in the heel, and later the shoulder. He survives, but is paralysed from the waist down. Ron has a very hard time accepting that, as seen in the scene where he tries to prove the doctors wrong and attempts to walk despite of his condition.
