“Three Shots” is a short story mainly revolving around two subjects: about unnecessary fear and growing up. It was written by Ernest Hemingway and was published in 1925. The short story is written in 3rd person. The story takes place in a tent in the woods. Ernest Hemmingway used the “in medias res” method for the short story.
The main character of the story, Nick, is a young boy. We get to go inside Nicks mind throughout the story, expressing his feelings and emotions. As soon as he’s left alone in the woods, he starts wondering about his existence on earth. His thoughts originated in the church, where they had sung a hymn called “Someday the silver cord will break”, which made him realize that someday he’ll pass away. The fact that they sung “someday the silver cord will break” could indicate that Nick was attending a funeral of some kind.
His realization then becomes unnecessary fear - there really wasn’t anything to be afraid of - and the thoughts haunted him; he kept wondering about death.
The thoughts are only terrorizing Nick when he’s by himself, most likely because during that timt, there’s nobody to interact with him to keep the thoughts off of his mind.
