The text is about Nick, his father and his uncle. Some Indians came to their camp, because they needed help. Nick, his father and uncle where sailed across the lake by the Indians. When they arrive to the Indian camp they realize that it’s a young Indian who was about to have a baby. The Indian girl had tried to give birth to the baby for nearly two days. Her husband lay in a bunk bed above her. Nicks father is a doctor and he makes Caesarian section, in the meanwhile her husband suicide with a razor.
The father:

He is proud of his work. He is focused on the job – not so much on the woman in pain. (“The screams are not important”) – He is a bit cynical, but he knows that the only way to get rid of the pain. He is exhilarated. The father regrets having brought Nick. Nick wasn’t supposed to see the dead Indian.
