3 The story takes place in an Indian camp. It’s about a boy named Nick; he is going to the camp with his father and his uncle. His dad and uncle are going to help an Indian woman in labor – she has tried to get the baby out for two days now (first page, line 18). Nick is helping his dad and uncle during the birth. When the baby is born they notice that the father to the new born baby has committed suicide – he had sliced himself with a razor in the throat.

4 TIME – PLACE – SOCIAL ENVIROMENT

The story follows a chronological way of being told. A curious fact is that the story begins and ends at the same place, which is in a boat.In the beginning of the text it’s evening (page 1, line 7 – it says it’s dark). They are at a lake.

The story “ends “at dawn

When the main characters enter the shanty they sense a troubled and tense atmosphere. The situation inside the hut is boiling,

5 Nick:The main character is the boy Nick because he is the only character to be seen from the inside and the outside. In the course of the story he goes from just having a slight idea of what it is to die, to actually experience the results of human suicide. Nick is a humble, sweet, and empathic boy who is exposed to the truths and the malice that one can find in life. He sees the world from a perspective that diverges with the perception that adults have of life. He is thoughtful and serene, and has no worries at all, except knowing the destination of the trip they so suddenly had to make.
