The story about Shrek and Fiona is based on the classic fairytale, where a princess is locked in a tower, and has to be rescued from the dragon by her Prince Charming. But in Shrek, the Prince is not charming, the Princess is not sleeping, the sidekick isn't helping and the ogre is the hero. In other words, it is an absurd fairytale, with some very, very unevenly characters.
In Shrek 2 there are a lot of examples of inter-textuality. Inter-textuality is a reference to- or within e.g. a novel, film, advertisement and so on. I think that the whole Shrek 2 movie is based on inter-textuality, because I do not remember that there is one single scene, which does not contain at least one example of inter-textuality. There is e.g. this one single scene, where there are three examples of inter-textuality in it. It is, when Prince Charming is in the highest tower to rescue Fiona from the dragon’s fortress. She is not there, but instead The Big Bad Wolf (from “3 Little Pigs”) is lying in the bed (from “Sleeping Beauty”) and reading a magazine named Pork Illustrated with a pig posing in a bikini (reference to some magazine).
