Opsummering af romanen 'The Old Woman'

The novel is about Molly and her husband Toddy, they get married during the war in England, but when Toddy’s service period has ended he goes back to Canada, but Molly had to stay in England, three years they are separated, and when Molly finally show up in Montreal to meet Toddy, he seems to have changed. Molly says to herself that he is just weird because they have not seen each other for so long; maybe he will change when they get to the house. The house is located in Missawani at the tip of Lake St. John in the northern part of Quebec. After the long trip to the house which was 30 miles out in the white desert of Canada, Toddy showed her around the house, and he showed her almost everything, except the powerhouse in which he spent most of his time.

After she had moved in and made herself at home, she started to get bored, Toddy spent all his time in the powerhouse, only coming home to eat and sleep. She read all of the books she brought and when she was done with them she read all of the magazines laying around the house, she cleaned to pass time too, but she soon realized that there was nothing to do it the house, her mind gets misty when she has nothing to do, and every time Toddy gets home she asks if he will teach her to ride the dog-sleigh but he tells her he has no time, the machines needs to be watched, without him they will not work. There were no neighbors to talk with, no telephone calls, the only other human contact Molly had was when one of Toddy’s men came with supplies and mail from Missawani, and that was only once every two weeks.
