The movie Green Street Hooligans is about the football culture in certain parts of the UK and what it’s like to come from a completely different country with a sports culture very unlike the one they have in England. The film shows how the violent hooligan culture completely changes the main character Matt. He goes from not being able to fight or stand up for himself, into being a great fighter and standing up for himself by confronting and beating up his former roommate, who had him kicked out of college, by forcing him into taking the blame for some cocaine found in their room.
The movie is good at showing us all sides of hooliganism. Not just all the violence and fighting, but also the unity and the brotherhood in the firms and the great commitments the hooligans have to each other. For example, in the scene where Matt decides to walk home alone, after watching a match between West Ham and Birmingham, and a small group of Birmingham fans jumps him, some of the Green Street Elite members rescue him, saying that they always have each other’s backs and never leave their mates behind. They also never run from a fight. Even if they are totally outnumbered, they always stand their ground and fight, as we see in one of the first fight scenes.
