In a mining town called Coalwood in West Virginia in the 1950’s, a young boy called Homer Hickam is destined to be a coal miner just like his own father. Suddenly on an October night in 1957, when a satellite called Sputnik goes into orbit. Homer gets so inspired of the satellite that he wants to change his destiny of becoming a coalminer. He wants to take the path of becoming a rocket scientist. He knows that he can’t achieve his dreams alone, so he gets help from two of his friends called O’Dell and Roy Lee, but the three of them can’t solve the problem of engendering a stable rocket, so they ask the school’ smartest nerd Quentin to help them. The four of them tries to create the rocket theoretically and practically. Most of the population in Coalwood and especially Homer’s dad think that it’s dangerous and waste of time. Only Miss Riley, who is a teacher in the high school, believes in the boys. She tells the boys to compete in the national science contest and win four scholarships. The movie ends with that the gang wins the national science contest and gets four scholarships to university. Homer Hickam’ ends with achieving his dream at the very end and changed his personal destiny of becoming a coalminer.
