We live in a world where some people live under fragmented circumstances. In huge parts of the northern Africa thousands of refugees put a risk on their lives trying to escape from the awful conditions they live under. One of those countless African refugees is an African who we hear about in the short story “The Go-Between” which is based on the Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Being invisible as a citizen in a society leads us to the fact that we should be aware of the situation that happens between the borders of the south of Spain and the north of Africa.
The narrator is a 33-year-old former biologist from Cameroon. He fled his country and he now works as a go-between guide for refugees seeking a better life in Europe. He operates from the Spanish city Ceuta in Morocco. He creates contact between the refugees and the international physicians who help in the region. He gives us an insight of his life experiences as a refugee who had tried to cross the borderline several times. In Ceuta where he is to be found he lives as an invisible citizen and he describes how impossible it will be if he decides to turn back to his country: “nobody leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark” (l.80) He does not explain why he cannot move back to his home country but we must assume that it is because of the lack of freedom and the lack of peace there is in the country. Therefore he decides to live as an invisible citizen in Ceuta.
