Nelson Mandela was the first black president in South Africa. He was born in 18 July 1918, and died 5 December 2013. Mandela’s father was a chief and advisor to the ruling Thembu chief. He died when Mandela was nine years old, but the ruling chief decided to look after and educate the young Mandela. He was fascinated by how the law was practiced and from an early age, he knew that he wanted to become a lawyer himself. Mandela decided that he wanted to work for justice in his country. When he finished the last year, the chief wanted him to go on University. Mandela say yes to be sent to the University College of Fort Hare, because it was a school for the best black students from both Southern, Central and Eastern Africa.

Soon Mandela became a member of the Students Union and together with other student’s he organized a demonstration to make the University listen to the student’s opinions. After University went Mandela to Johannesburg and he became more and more interested in politics. In 1942 joined Nelson Mandela the African National Congress (ANC). In 1952 opened Mandela the first black law firm in Johannesburg. The government banned the ANC in 1960. Mandela and other leading ANC members went underground and continued their work. They travelled secretly around the country and abroad spreading the message that the white regime had gone too far and the ANC must prepare itself for an armed struggle. In 1962, was Mandela caught by the police and sentenced five years in prison for leaving the country without permission.
