Analyse af 'On Pale Green Walls' og børns misforståelser

On Pale Green Walls is a short story written by Clare Wigfall in 1997. The story is about the relationship between children and adults and how children often can be misunderstood by their parents or other adults. In this story the little girl Violet strive for understanding and attention. This leads to frustrations by her parent, because they misunderstand her signals.

The little girl Violet is mute and she lives in a religious family. On day violet sees a statue of a woman in a blue dress and she gets very fascinated by her. The woman is Virgin Mary and Violet starts recognizing her in many places. Virgin Mary becomes an angel to Violet and she feels a strong connection to her, almost like she is her mother. Because Violet is a child, she doesn’t know who Virgin Mary is. One day she sees Virgin Mary in her blue dress in the newspaper holding a baby in her arms. Violet gets extremely jealous when she sees that the baby gets all the attention from Virgin Mary. "I Stared at the baby's face and hated it as I'd never hated anything before. She was looking down on it, smiling at its bald head. And I could tell how she loved it." (lines 49-51) She gets so frustrated that she draws blood on the baby in the newspaper. Violet misses the love, which she sees and feels in the picture of Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus. The drawing results in that her parents get very angry and concerned about their daughters behavior.
