What does it mean to be Amish?
Anabaptists.
Amish History and Beliefs:
History: Mennonite community, 1720s or 1730s, Jacob Amman.
Beliefs: Ordnung.
Lifestyle:
Family: Important, lots of children,
Style of dress: broad fall trousers, solid-colored shirts, black or straw hats.
Language: Pennsylvania Dutch, learning English.
Electricity: get creative, larger household equipment.
Transportation: horses and trolleys, against Amish values and beliefs, public transportation, bicycle.
Financials: use banks, self-sufficient, Amish church aid.
Recreation: baseball, explore and experience.
Health: Family to family.
Religion and traditions:
Church services: church member’s home.
Baptism: late teens and early twenties, the rest of their lives, shunned.
Weddings: October to December, Tuesday and Thursday, blessing, growing a beard.
Selection of Amish ministers: Two or three ministers, chosen by men, married.
Funeral services: dressed in white, at the family house, no singing.
Education and work:
Amish education: one-room schoolhouses, 8th grade, help their parents.
Family work rules: chores, daily “paycheck”.
