For many years the Commonwealth has played a significant role in Britain - yet some politicians think, that the influence of the Commonwealth should be decreased. Does the Commonwealth still play a significant role for Britain? Is the Commonwealth irrelevant? These are questions which are discussed in the article “A Royal Salute to the Commonwealth” by the journalist Peter Oborne.

The following points are displayed in the article by Peter Oborne:

It is mentioned, how some politicians dislikes the Royal family, because they - in opinion of these politicians - represent “old” and “xenophobic” and even “racist” values. In contrast, Peter thinks quite the opposite. He thinks, that the “Commonwealth is more relevant than ever”, and that the Royal family represent values such as “freedom”, ”humane values” and “democratic values”.

When focusing on the role of the Commonwealth, a concern is also displayed in the text: The queen has a lot of influence due to her good relationships with leaders around the world, and when she dies, a lot of that may be lost. It is therefore essential, that the potential of “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge” is upheld, or else they might not be able to do great things for Britain.
