It all started in the 1600s when the British trading companies, set up trading post in India, to create a marked for British manufactured goods, and to secure raw materials for Britain. The guest for wealth and power led the British to establish colonies all over the world, and therefore people say that the sun never sets on the British Empire. Because of that the British had colonies all over the world, the school system is still predominant in most former colonies, and the English language is still widespread. It’s actually more than 350 million people on six continents speak English as their first language. At the beginning of the twentieth century, many colonies gained independence from Britain. Decolonization continued and a lot of other colonies followed their example. Many of the members are poor and have problems, such as national debt. The commonwealth works for social and economic development, as a result of free trade and investments. All members need to respect the human rights and they have to be democratic nations. Today 53 countries are members of The Commonwealth of Nations.
