Originally from Switzerland (Europe) (and travelled to the USA in 1720 due to religious prosecution in Europa and the fact that there was religious tolerance in the USA. The Mennonites wanted to separate the state and church (secularism) Later the Amish (Jacob Amman) separated themselves from the Mennonites because they wanted more discipline. Jacob Amman thought they should stay away from those who got shunned. (expelled from church)
Old-fashioned, a simple lifestyle
They don't use or believe in technology because:
Important idiom that describes Amish values. The family that plows together stays together
The negative effects on people and families (distancing themselves from one another)
Not using tech all generations to participate in the farm work.
They believe that using tech forces you to become a slave.
From their point of view they aren't old-fashioned- just true to their values.
There are peace loving- don't believe in weapons and war.
They fear that technology will create a distance between them and God.
Rules for the wedding ceremony: Blue dress, no engagement/wedding ring, Thursday only
Reject help from surrounding society id est (det vil sige) no insurance or hospitalization
Minimal contact with non-Amish people (The devil's servants)
They don't join the military
