1. As a young man, Frank wanted to become a poet and he had succeeded in publishing a couple of books some years ago. But he did not earn very much and then he became a teacher, without quitting his writing completely.
After fourteen years of marriage his wife became angry that he could only write about the time they met each other, so she left him, “sacrificed” their marriage for literature. Now Frank lives with one of his previous students, Julia.
2. The play Educating Rita was written by the British author Willy Russell in 1981. The front page of the play informs the reader that it is a comedy, and it is indeed funny; however, the play deals with some serious topics. The play centralizes around Rita who as a young working-class girl enters an Open University course with the tutor Frank. Obviously, the play raises questions concerning education, ability to change personality and most of all, ability to break the social barrier.
The setting of the play is in Frank’s office on the first floor of a university in the north of England. The office is quite messy and full of books but indeed has a great view of the university. The entire play takes place in these settings, which draw focus on the actors’ actions and lines instead of their surroundings. Exactly in this room, two people from different social classes meet and develop radically as human beings.
