Analysis – Hope Springs Eternal – Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption
Narration / point of view
The story is telling by Ellis Boyd Redding, he is also named Red.
To illustrate this, we have an example from the text: on pp. 23-24 ll. 37-2
We can read that the events are seen from Red’s point of view.
It is a first-person narrator, because he tells the story from his point of view. In the first line, we can see that it is a first-person narrator and he is a part of the history.
When Red came to Shawshank he was 20 years old (p. 11 l. 7), but when he was released he was in his late fifties.
He came to Shawshank because he has murdered his wife and a friend of her. He had spoiled the brakes in the car, so the wife and her friend ended up in a car accident.
He was one of few who is willing to own up to what he did.
His attitude is positive to the other characters and the readers: Already when Andy comes to Shawshank Red knows everything about the environment and Shawshank in general, that does also have a positive influence for the reader.
