A parent’s greatest wish is to raise successful and happy children. Their adult life is shaped by how the parents raise them, and how effective they are at it. David has spent the last seven months in a hospital at the psychiatric ward. His parents have therefore been unsuccessful at raising him properly. His mother is wondering what went wrong, and when.

he twenty year old son, David, has been brought home from the hospital's psychiatric department, and he does not speak or answer his mother, who sits up front alone. David said that she must not ask him any questions. Just the fact that he will not say anything, show fairly clearly - in my eyes at least - that he has been on psychiatric ward for a while – that something had been wrong in his upbringing. That he will not answer some questions from his own mother shows me that there is something between mother and son who is not right and certainly doesn’t work.

As a mother, Mary reacts to this by starting to wonder what has gone wrong, and when her son came out of their reach. But while she wondered what the reason was for her son being as he was, she already had a guess:
