Analytical Essay of 2BR02BThe short story ”2BR02B” by Kurt Vonnegut, written in 1962, is a tale of a dystopian future where the main problem is world overpopulation. At the beginning of the story the society is described as a “perfect world”: “There were no prisons, no slums, no insane asylums, no cripples, no poverty, no wars” but we soon figure out that something is very wrong. In this world, thanks to a new drug, no one can get any older, and ageing is not an issue anymore and people can easily get over 200 years old without ageing: “Back in the days when people aged visibly, his age would have been guessed at thirty-five or so.”
At one point in the text, the narrator tells us, that USA has stabilized the population at 40 million people, which is maintained through a combination of infanticide and government assisted suicide. In order to do this, the Government has stipulated, that for every child to be born, another person has to volunteer to die.
The plot takes place in the Chicago lying-in Hospital and the plot has only one location: The waiting room. This is where we meet the protagonist ”Edward K. Wehling Jr. Waiting for his wife to give birth to triplets. You should think that this would be the happiest moment of Mr. Wehling´s life, but in this world, having three kids, means that three people have to die and consequently, this is definitely not a joyful moment for him: ”Young Wehling was hunched in his chair, his head in his hand. He was so rumpled, so still and colorless as to be virtually invisible.”
