The story Happy Birthday written by Kurt Vonnegut 1951 is about a boy and an old man.

The old man and the boy they live in a cellar alone, they talk about wish day the little boy want to have his birthdate, tomorrow he says. The old man told the little boy about a place he wants to show him, and the old man promised the boy that tomorrow on his birthday, they are going there.

The old man tries to make the boy see that there are other things in life then soldiers and war. He tries to be the good role model for the boy. he is depressed about not giving the boy his birthday presents the last six – seven years. He cares about the boy like he was his father (he kind of is). He is afraid of the boy’s future. When the boy runs away from him in the forest, the old man panic.

The boy does not know his birthdate, his nationality or his name. he was given to the old man buy a woman around six or seven years ago, he is young and curious about the war, the soldiers and the tanks, he doesn’t know anything else, then the war. he is so interested in the war and the soldiers, that he knows the differences between the color red and black, blue and red, and the meaning of wish color belongs to whom. He runs away from the old man in the pine forest, because he wants to play in the old rusty tank.
