Next door is quite an interesting story. It takes a different and somewhat surreal view, on growing up and losing one’s innocence and childhood. We meet a young boy who suddenly is thrown out in some situations that forces him to become an adult. However, we see how his surroundings still treats him more or less like a child.

Summary:

This short story is about a boy who is home alone for the first time. There are no problems in the start but suddenly the neighbors’ starts to argue. They are arguing with the radio on high volume so our protagonist can barely hear what the argument is about. The fight grows with our protagonists’ conscience, so when he finally decides to end their fight he calls the radio station to help him, but the outcome is quite different that he imagined.

About the author.

“Kurt Vonnegut was an American novelist, satirist, and most recently, graphic artist. Known for works blending satire, black comedy and science fiction.

His experiences as an advance scout in the Battle of the Bulge, and in particular his witnessing of the bombing of Dresden, Germany whilst a prisoner of war, would inform much of his work. This event would also form the core of his most famous work, Slaughterhouse-Five, the book which would make him a millionaire.
