What will our society be like in year 2081? Will we be jealous of each other? Will we finally obtain what so many people have been speaking about; equality? Harrison Bergeron is a short story written by Kurt Vonnegut. Originally, the short story was published in 1961 in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. In 1968 Harrison Bergeron was republished in the author’s Welcome to the Monkey House collection. The story takes place in year 2081 in the United States of America and reflects a possible development of the society. The short story expresses an idea of what the world might look like, if everybody were equal, something we all have been fighting to obtain for the last hundreds of years.
The structure of the short story starts with a presentation of the society. The story takes place at year 2081, and the most important thing in the society is being equal. During the beginning of the short story, the readers are being introduced to how the society works and to the main characters. George and Hazel are the two main characters. George is more intelligent than Hazel, but they appear to be at the same level. This is the idea about being equal; the fortunate people are being downgraded to average level. Afterwards, the readers are presented to the everyday-routine of the main characters. The readers follow the main characters reactions, when they are watching television. They are watching Ballerinas dancing at an average level; even though they are not at a high level, they still compliment them.
