The short story 2BR02B was written in 1952, in the Beat Generation literature period. It is possible that it was widely distributed writing imagining stories about what would happen in the future. And possibly living in a world, imagining what the next time period would be like, was also wildly distributed. One of the most recurring themes in this short story is social criticism, government control and individuality.

Interestingly, in this short story, Vonnegut focuses on individuality in an absurd way. In requiring, each new life comes at the cost of any other one, because the population of the United States has been decreased to 40,000 people, and because the US government assumes that human lives are interchangeable. The overpowering of individuality is also revealed in the painter’s resentment of the mural he’s working on, which is a good representation of life as a tidy garden with no mess. Also, government control is a theme, because the government controls the population by authorizing that each new life comes at the price of a volunteered suicide.

The language is in this short story is modest and easy to understand. The sentences differ in length, and Vonnegut does not use difficult words, that would be able to make the story more difficult to understand. Vonnegut has used different narrative techniques, to make the short story more appealing in terms of language and style.
