The main messages of the film are how death can influence the death person’s relatives, in this case Gilberts dad Albert Grape. The second main theme is how sorrow can make people go down with the flag. Gilberts mom Bonnie Grape went totally down after Albert “hung him self out to dry” as gilbert says in the start, then she became fat and denied the answer for the family. In this essay I will try to follow up on gilberts life, to find out what a person he is.
Death. Death fills a lot in Gilberts life, his dad died, Betty’s husband ken died and in the end of the movie his mom also died.
Gilbert wants to quit his family, like his big brother Larry witch “got away”. But we hears the mom say to him, that she can’t manage to loss one more, and Gilbert is too nice a person to leave his family. When Becky ask him what his biggest wish is he just answers “to be a nice person”, and not too get away. Because he knows that they wouldn’t survive without him.
But the death of his father forces him to take answer for his family, which does him very decent. To put it bluntly it have also helped him to be a better person, but it have also given him some consequences consisting of sorrow.
