In the Western Australia, 1930 in the town Jigalong, lives 14-year-old Molly Craig together with her 8-year-old sister Daisy Kadibil. They live with their mother and grandmother, and their 10-year-old cousin Gracie Fields. The city lies along the northern part of Australia's rabbit proof fence that is several thousand miles.
Very far away from Jigalong, is there "the protector" of the West Australian Aborigines, A. O Neville. Neville has ordered that the three girls should be moved to reeducation camp because they are half-blood children. This means that the mother or the father is white and the other partner from an original race. Neville believes that the half –bloods are endangering themselves and the original race should be exterminated. The children become forcibly removed from their home in Jigalong and taken to the camp in Moore River to the south. There are only half-blood children in different ages. They will learn about the white culture and if they are white enough, they can go in normal school. Neville believes that the white is the brightest. The 3 children hope that spirit bird will protect them.
Molly, Gracie and Daisy will escape from Moore River and walk home to Jigalong. An Aboriginal tracker named Moodoo is sent to find them. But the girls are smart, so they hide their tracks. The three girls are getting help from a lot of strangers in the country through the journey. The girls must find the rabbit proof fence that follows the north to Jigalong. Neville has soon found their strategy and sends Moodoo and a local policeman after them. Although Moodoo is an experienced tracker, he can’t find them.
