“We need to talk about Kevin” tells us a story about a physical and psychological growth of a disturbed boy that lives with his parents and little sister. He commits a Columbine at his school finally. The story of the film is told through Kevin’s mother, Eva, who are questioning the choice she made like how she felt about Kevin, actions that were and were not taken and what the cause of her son killing his classmates was or was Kevin just born with an unstable mind-set at all? In the film we see that Kevin’s mother, Eva, has a successful career. She works at a travel agency. Eva travels a lot and sometimes it lasts for months at a time. Later she marries Franklin who is a sort of a freelance photographer. The couple decides late in their forties that they should have children, but she loves her work so much that it is like her life to her, so why should she probably have any children? Kevin is Eva’s child, but there is not a really mother-son bond between them, since they never talk to each other and therefore Eva realize that there is a problem with Kevin, but in the eyes of Franklin there is not really a difference between Kevin and other children’s in addition to he is normal. Even if Eva wants to make a very close bond with Kevin it is hard to kind of understand and handle Kevin. Eva feels that Kevin's delinquent actions have the sole purpose of hurting her. Even after committing the violent massacre in the high school, Eva still goes to visit her son. It is like her duty to do it since she is the mother. She makes huge efforts to be a good mom, but it is not enough to save her son from committing such a crime. You can conclude that Eva is not the perfect mother, but Kevin is not the perfect son either. The relationship between them is estranged. The relationship between Kevin and Franklin is superficial. They have this bond only because of their common interest in archery and not for the love. It does not mean that Franklin and Kevin have a good connection because at all. The family is overall very unhealthy. From the beginning when Kevin is a baby he cries a lot. He is however not interested in anything. He does not like playing, social interaction and sees everything negative. it is the difference between him and other children’s. He hates everything. There are few signs which show that Kevin is not a normally developing child. It begins with what he does to neighbourhood boy’s bike when he unscrews a bolt. Later his indications become worse when he accuses his teacher of inappropriate teacher-student relationship and ultimately the high school massacre in the end. The victims he has appointed is very specific since he choose one individual from every single type of social group. His plan is very elaborated as he wants them meet in a gym and locks all the doors. Kevin’s choice of choosing weapon is bow and arrow because he is good at it. He kills the students and he is proud of his evil action he completes.
